Robusta coffee is less common than the arabica species of plant typically used by specialty coffee roasters, and has not historically been produced using the same high standards of artisanal craftsmanship. Previously dismissed by coffee connoisseurs, the humbler robusta coffee species has grown in popularity recently as a more sustainable alternative to arabica, prized by consumers for its high caffeine content, with less acidity and sugar.
“Paradise has been collaborating with robusta producers since 2004,” commented owner and coffee director R. Miguel Meza. “We believe specialty coffee is a process – not just a species, a variety, or a place.”

Who’s Involved In The Robusta Coffee Subscription
Estates and small farming communities represented by the program hail from Brazil, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and elsewhere, as each region comes into season. Paradise works and trades directly with each producing group, in many cases collaborating to design novel processing methods for each lot that accentuate desired flavors and other sensory characteristics.
What’s On The Menu This Month
The July 2023 inaugural offering is an anaerobic lactic natural processed coffee from Hacienda Legrand, operated by fourth generation coffee farmer Denise Bustamante. Hacienda Legrand is a young farm in Ecuador’s Santa Elena province, planted in 2016 with a new variety of robusta called Ecurobusta, which was bred specifically for its coastal microclimate. The cup yields a savory-sweet creamy vanilla, coconut, and oak flavor with a creamy mouthfeel. This coffee received a 92-point score from Ken Davids’ Coffee Review.
