Luther’s Cafe.
Edward A. Ornelas, Staff / San Antonio Express-NewsEl Camino owner Ricky Ortiz already has a new sports bar in the works on San Antonio’s Northwest Side, but he’s not not slowing down any time soon. On Wednesday, July 5, he announced yet another project is coming to the Alamo City, and this time around, it’s popping up on hallowed ground.
In an Instagram video posted from El Camino’s profile, Ortiz unveiled plans to transform the former Luther’s Cafe into Ay Que Chula, a sports bar and restaurant. He went on to say that the new concept will serve Mexican food and is expected to have several televisions to screen major sporting events.
The most important question on people’s minds, based on responses to Ortiz’s video, is whether or not the new bar has a place for LGBTQ+ folks. The answer is a resounding yes from Ortiz, who responded kindly to curious comments.

When Luther’s Cafe shuttered in October 2022, no one could have predicted that we’d never hear from the business again. Unfortunately, the building that once housed the beloved, 79-year-old business has remained dormant ever since. Now, Ortiz is looking to breath new life into the space with Ay Que Chula, which is expected to open within the next 60 to 90 days.
