The manager of a popular four-star hotel has spoken out after the “stunning” venue was handed a food hygiene rating of two.
Brockley Hall, in Saltburn, has been told that improvement is necessary after inspectors visited the hotel on June 15. The “amazing” venue is highly rated on Trip Advisor, with customers describing it as “stunning in every way” as well as its “luxurious” meal offerings.
Hotel and restaurant manager Phillip Jeffels said he was “surprised” by the rating and put it down to the “mechanical failure” of one of the venue’s fridges, as well as a few “minor” issues. The manager has said that a re-inspection has been paid for and booked in – with Brockley Hall hoping to return to its five-star rating in the very near future.
Mr Jeffels told Teesside Live: “It was in June [the inspection], on one of the hottest days in the year. One of the big walk-in fridges was continuing to work but it wasn’t cold enough inside.
“We removed everything from inside and everything was disposed of and we had the fridge repaired the following day. I was a bit surprised we got two-stars on a mechanical failure and we have asked them to come back for a reinspection, they are due back in the next few days.”
The manager noted how there were a couple of “minor issues” highlighted during the inspection such as some “scratched” chopping boards. However, he added that they replace these boards every few months.
“They have to judge what they see at the time and I understand that,” he added. “We accept that the local authority has to safeguard the public in doing what they do and we totally understand that.”
Three areas were looked at during the inspection of the Greenside venue, with the hygienic food handling being handed the “improvement necessary” label. This looks at food preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage.
The management of food safety – which sees inspectors look at aspects such as the system or checks in place to ensure food sold and served is safe to eat and staff food safety knowledge – was ranked as generally satisfactory.
Despite the two-star rating, the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were rated as good. This looked at whether the venue has an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand-washing facilities, and pest control to enable good food hygiene.
The AA four-star hotel and two-rosette fine dining restaurant are both highly regarded by customers online. One happy customer said on TripAdvisor: “Stunning food in every way and fabulous atmosphere. Love the decor as well.
“Definitely my favourite place in Saltburn. Even has a lovely garden area to enjoy in the sun if get the chance. Worth a visit – [you] won’t be disappointed.”
Earlier this year, Brockley Hall was crowned Teesside’s top spot for Sunday dinner following a Teesside Live poll. The venue managed to get 33.2% of the overall vote, followed by The Oven in Middlesbrough with 8.5% of the vote.
