Panaji: Barely days after Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) warned that the city’s roads were susceptible to cave-ins and subsidence, a truck got stuck in the heart of the city after the road crumbled on Saturday.
The vehicle ferrying soft drinks got trapped after its rear wheels sank into the road. The vehicle was finally towed out and officials filled up the hole using rubble.
The incident, which occurred near Azad Maidan, once again highlighted the risk to motorists posed by the haphazard execution of the trenchless method of horizontal directional drilling for the sewerage network.
IPSCDL has constituted a team to respond to instances of subsidence and road cave-ins during the monsoons.
Since January, trucks carrying heavy loads have been getting trapped as the roads give way under the weight of the trucks. Smart City Mission officials have attributed this to the movement of soil and gaps due to the underground drilling for HDPE sewerage lines.
